According to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper, the German federal government has no plans to provide additional financial assistance to Ukraine in the near future. The reason for this is the lack of funds in the current budget planning that could be transferred to Kyiv.
According to the newspaper, the suspension was initiated by Finance Minister Christian Lindner. In a letter dated August 5, he asked Defense Minister Borys Pistorius to stop allocating funds to Ukraine and monitor compliance with the established budgetary limits.
However, the already agreed payments and arms deliveries to Ukraine will be made. In 2024, Germany has planned to allocate eight billion euros to support Ukraine, with a maximum limit of four billion euros for 2025. These funds have already been allocated, and additional requests from the Ministry of Defense will no longer be granted by order of Chancellor Olaf Scholz, FAZ notes.
At the same time, according to CDU MP Indo Gedehans, Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his government are actually freezing financial and military support for Ukraine. However, Germany, together with the G7 countries, is working to create an instrument to finance Ukraine through the use of frozen Russian assets.
