Shooting of police officers in Vinnytsia region: SBI exposes military who helped suspects to escape from justice

від Савицький Олексій April 26, 2024

The SBI exposed two military officers who helped suspects in the attack on patrol policemen in Vinnytsia region escape.

According to the investigation, on April 20, 2024, two servicemen, who were wanted on suspicion of shooting police officers in Vinnytsia region, asked a fellow officer to help them hide and illegally cross the state border of Ukraine.

Despite the fact that the public already knew that the father and son were wanted for the murder of a law enforcement officer, the defendants responded and decided to help. In particular, one of them handed over a car for the escape abroad, and the other went to pick up passports and a cell phone, which he later handed over to the attackers.

Having received the consent, the wanted servicemen hid their car in the garage of the suspect’s father. They also took the car of a fellow officer and drove to Podilsk, Odesa region, where they were detained.

On the night of April 20, two police officers stopped a car in the Haisyn district of Vinnytsia region to check it. There were two passengers in the car, who opened fire on the police. 20-year-old police officer Maksym Zaretskyi died of his wounds, and his partner was injured.

Valeriy and Vitaliy Vasilake are currently in pre-trial detention. They are suspected of murder and attempted murder of police officers, as well as desertion with weapons. At the trial, Valeriy (Vitaliy’s father) said that patrol officer Masksym Zaretskiy was shot by his son.

The pre-trial investigation is being carried out by investigators of the Second Investigation Department (based in Odesa) of the SBI’s TU located in Mykolaiv.

ISW assesses threats to Ukrainian defense near Avdiivka and Chasovyi Yar

від Савицький Олексій April 26, 2024

Russian invaders have focused their offensive on the town of Chasiv Yar in the Donetsk region. Currently, more than 20,000 Nazis are storming the city. This was stated by Nazar Voloshyn, spokesman for the Khortytsia operational and strategic group of troops.

According to him, units of the 217th Parachute Regiment of the 98th Airborne Division of the Russian Airborne Forces are fighting against the Ukrainian military on the frontline near the town of Chasiv Yar.

According to analysts, the enemy’s offensive in the Avdiivka area is aimed at using only opportunities for advancement, while their operation near Chasovyi Yar is a “real threat to capture the city.” This assumption was made by analysts of the Institute for the Study of War (ISW)

Russian troops pose a real threat to capture Chasovy Yar, although they may not be able to do so quickly.

Analysts at the Institute for War Studies noted that Russian offensive operations west of Avdiivka could provide tactical advantages. And the Russian offensive to capture Chasovyi Yar opens up immediate prospects for Russian troops to make an operationally significant advance.

Russian troops in the Avdiivka area remain approximately 30 km from their intended operational objective, Pokrovsk, and approximately 17 km from relatively large villages east of the district center.

Russian troops, who are currently stationed on the eastern outskirts of Chasovyi Yar, have been stepping up efforts to capture the city since March 2024. Now, analysts believe, they offer the occupiers “immediate prospects for a significant operational advance” as the capture of the city is likely to “allow them to launch further operations” against the cities that form a significant Ukrainian defense belt in Donetsk region.

Russian troops are likely to try to capture as much territory as possible before the arrival of U.S. military assistance significantly improves Ukraine’s defensive capabilities in the coming weeks. Russian commanders may intensify their offensive northwest of Avdiivka, as this area provides more opportunities for strikes, despite the relative operational insignificance of these gains.

Even if Russian tactical successes force Ukrainian forces to retreat to positions further west, the current Russian advances northwest of Avdiivka are unlikely to be operationally significant in the short term.

The European Parliament has not recognized the presidential election in Russia: European Parliament declares Putin’s election not legitimate

від Савицький Олексій April 25, 2024

On April 25, at a meeting in Strasbourg, the European Parliament adopted a resolution “On the undemocratic presidential elections in Russia and their illegitimate extension to the occupied territories.” The resolution was supported by 493 deputies, 11 voted against and 18 abstained. The press service of the institution reports.

In the document, the deputies conclude that the so-called presidential elections in Russia were illegitimate and undemocratic.

Reportedly, the resolution strongly condemns all electoral violations committed by the Putin regime during the so-called presidential elections in Russia on March 15-17, 2024, as well as previous long-lasting and systemic repression and violations of civil and political rights;

The document emphasizes that the so-called presidential elections in Russia were held in an atmosphere of fear and repression, as well as in the context of an illegal, unprovoked and unjustified aggressive war against Ukraine.

Meanwhile, MEPs call on the EU to continue to actively support independent Russian civil society organizations, independent media and human rights defenders, as well as to actively engage with and support the Russian democratic opposition.

The Chairman of the UK Chiefs of Staff, Anthony Radakin, said that Ukraine intends to intensify long-range strikes on Russian territory.

від Савицький Олексій April 25, 2024

Ukraine intends to intensify long-range strikes on Russian territory, as the influx of Western military aid is intended to help Kyiv act in a “much more decisive way,” the British Chief of Defense Staff has said. The admiral said this in an interview with the Financial Times.

Admiral Sir Tony Radakin has admitted that Ukraine’s defense is in a state of decline and that the country faces a “difficult” fight to repel the Russian offensive.

However, the head of the UK defense ministry, a key figure in the West’s military support for Kyiv, emphasized that such a gloomy “snapshot” of the conflict does not allow us to recognize longer-term trends that are emerging in Kyiv’s favor.

The admiral emphasized that these include the latest aid packages from the United States and Europe, Ukraine’s increasingly successful long-range strikes, and “Moscow’s complete failure in its attempt to cut off Kyiv’s vital grain exports through the Black Sea.”

“The danger of any picture is that it does not take into account where we are now and where we will be in the next few years,” Radakin said, adding that people should stop “exalting Russia” and believing that it “somehow” has great advantages.

Radakin did not express concern about Ukrainian attacks and sabotage raids inside Russia. “As Ukraine gains more long-range capabilities…its ability to continue deep operations [will increasingly] become a feature of the conflict,” Radakin said, adding, “They definitely have an effect.”

After several months of uncertainty about the West’s strategy in Ukraine, Radakin is optimistic about a situation where all NATO countries are “talking about spending more money.”

In his opinion, Ukraine appreciated the latest round of support as a help in stabilizing the deteriorating situation.

“Don’t wait for someone to say publicly: ‘This is the plan,’ and now A, B and C will happen,” Radakin said.

“Some elements of Ukraine’s military approach are ‘hidden’…, some of them will be dictated by tactical or operational advantages, and some will also depend on more fundamental aspects,” he emphasized.

The BES reports on tax evasion by a well-known online casino for more than a billion

від Савицький Олексій April 23, 2024

Detectives of the Bureau of Economic Security are investigating the fact of tax evasion of over UAH 1 billion by a well-known organizer of online casino gambling.

The investigation found that the company paid out UAH 4.5 billion in winnings to players, of which it failed to pay personal income tax and military duty totaling UAH 1.1 billion. These payments were not reflected as winnings, but as refunds of funds, i.e. deposits, to individuals that were allegedly not used in gambling.

According to the BES, the company’s employees, players, and contractors have already been questioned, and investigative actions have been taken, including searches and inquiries, and temporary access to belongings and documents has been obtained.

The accounts of the business, which was allowed to pay taxes and salaries from the accounts, were arrested. “At the time of the announcement of one of the rulings, the company’s officials transferred 100 million to the counterparty’s accounts, and these funds were subsequently arrested,” the BES reports.

“The pre-trial investigation is ongoing. The BES detectives continue to collect evidence that will be used both for forensic economic examination, which is intended to confirm the amount of damage caused to the budget of Ukraine, and to prove illegal activities,” the BES said in a statement.

According to the Interfax-Ukraine news agency , this refers to the Cosmolot online casino, whose co-owner Arnulf Damerau recently told the Financial Times that corrupt officials in Ukraine’s law enforcement agencies and the presidential administration are trying to extort tens of millions of euros from him.

Damerau denies the accusations and believes that the claims are fabricated. According to official tax returns, the company, which offers themed online games with small bets, paid 60 million euros in taxes last year.

As part of the criminal proceedings, the company’s bank accounts were seized, but according to the court ruling, it was allowed to make all necessary payments to the budget and pay salaries.

Values. Christian democracy as a new ideological phenomenon

від Майданюк Валерій April 22, 2024

Christian democratic parties throughout Europe emerged as a fundamentally new phenomenon that required new ideological foundations. This ideology not only reflected public sentiment but also actively changed socio-cultural principles. To a large extent, it was Christian democrats who created a new European political culture. Most of the ideologies of Christian democracy have now become part of European political culture and social life.

The main markers of the ideology of Christian democracy were:

Social market economy. Economic policy should be regulated by the state, not just by the laws of the market. The state should support not only large corporations, but also the middle class and small owners. The redistribution of social resources should be aimed at supporting the most socially vulnerable strata of society. The state should stimulate the disappearance of poverty.

A welfare society. One of the most notable changes associated with Christian democracy was a qualitative leap in the growth of the welfare of all segments of the population. The rise in living standards in European countries eventually led to the emergence of the phenomenon of the “welfare state.”

It is often said that the European economy grew exclusively due to the implementation of the US Marshall Plan. However, history knows many examples when huge economic aid, due to ineffective governance in recipient countries, was not beneficial and sometimes even had the opposite effect.

The significant rise in living standards in European countries was much more complex and was due to several factors. The economic integration of Western European countries created a new large market that fostered business development.

For a long time, the growth of living standards was positively influenced by Keynesianism, which became the dominant theory in the postwar period. Public spending on social items has been steadily increasing, especially in health care and education.

The Keynesian policy exhausted itself only in the second half of the 1970s. It was then that it became clear that overregulation of the economy and high taxes lead to economic stagnation. But for a very long period, European governments managed to keep a “golden mean” between the interests of business development and social guarantees for the general population. It was during the Christian Democrats’ rule that the era of “economic miracles” in Italy and Germany took place.

Interfaith. An important feature of Christian democratic parties was their universalism. On the one hand, this was reflected in the fact that Christian parties were non-denominational entities. If the Christian parties of the prewar period were “niche” forces that represented the interests of one denomination, the postwar Christian democratic parties were either interdenominational or non-denominational forces.

European integration. The universalism of the Christian Democrats allowed the countries of the European continent to begin a process of regional cooperation that gradually led to the creation of the European Union. All the ministers who signed the 1951 agreement establishing the European Coal and Steel Community were representatives of Christian Democratic parties. This community became the basis from which the EU was gradually created. The European Union was founded on the cultural unity of European nations based on Christian values and the need for deeper economic integration.

Global cooperation. The universal nature of Christianity led Christian democrats to create global ideological associations. In 1961, the World Christian Democratic Union was established on the initiative of Christian Democrats in Europe. Within the framework of this association, a concept of assistance to developing countries was developed – “developmental subsidiarity”. This concept stipulates that financial assistance to other countries should be directed to modernization and stimulation of economic growth. In 1999, the World Christian Democratic Union was renamed the Centrist Democratic International.

Subsidiarity. One of the basic principles of Christian democracy is subsidiarity. The state should take any centralized measures only if they are more effective than the corresponding measures at the local or regional levels.

Limiting the powers of the executive branch. Christian democracy brought a new vision of political processes. Realizing that totalitarian movements in Italy and Germany came to power not only through street violence but also through parliamentary procedures, Christian democratic governments introduced a number of significant legal innovations. In particular, most European countries introduced the institution of a constitutional court. This institution was supposed to limit the powers of the executive branch of government.

Countering extremism. A legal innovation related to the activities of the Christian Democrats was the legislative consolidation of the procedure for banning extremist parties. If in the pre-war period the ban of certain parties was arbitrary, now such a ban is possible only through compliance with a clear legal procedure. In many countries, such as Germany, such a ban is the prerogative of the Constitutional Court.

Protection of human rights. To protect citizens from unlawful decisions within the country, supranational judicial institutions for the protection of human rights and freedoms were created on the initiative of Christian democrats. This is how the European Commission of Human Rights was established in 1954 and the European Court of Human Rights in 1959.

Enshrining the rights of the opposition. In contrast to totalitarian practices, Christian democrats abandoned their attempts to secure a monopoly on power for one party. The full rights of the opposition in postwar Europe were not only declared, but for the first time in world history were enshrined in law.

Germany disrupted the supply of MRAP armored vehicles to Ukraine – BILD investigation

від Савицький Олексій April 22, 2024

The German government has promised to provide up to 400 units of heavy wheeled MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) armored vehicles with enhanced mine protection to the Ukrainian military – Bild.

According to the publication, Germany has promised to supply the Ukrainian Armed Forces with up to 400 heavy wheeled MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) armored vehicles with enhanced mine protection. The relevant contract was signed by the Ukrainian authorities and the German defense company Flensburger Fahrzeugbau GmbH (FFG) with funding from the German budget totaling 315 million euros.

The German Defense Ministry said that all the vehicles are scheduled to be delivered this year.

Bild obtained a document from the Defense Ministry dated September 2023, which states that MRAPs for the Armed Forces should be delivered in batches of 20 from January to October 2024. However, no deliveries have yet begun.

According to the publication, this year’s plan was reduced first to 200 and then to 100 cars. The start of delivery was postponed from January to May-June. The reason is that FFG receives spare parts for MRAPs from the United States and only assembles them in Germany. The company faced “export license restrictions from the United States to Germany” and problems with mine protection certification.

As you know, Germany has already sent Ukraine an impressive arsenal of weapons, including various types of artillery pieces, Leopard tanks of both old and new modifications, IRIS-T and Patriot air defense systems, ammunition, vehicles, drones, and much more.

SBU detains Russian agent-game who hunted Patriot and NASAMS air defense systems in Kyiv

від Савицький Олексій April 22, 2024

Among the main targets of the enemy were radar stations and air defense missile systems protecting the capital region.

The defendant was supposed to find this weapon and adjust the enemy’s fire on it.

To carry out the enemy’s task, he arrived in Ukraine from Russia on the eve of February 24, 2022, under the “legend” of a seller of household and fuel and lubricant chemicals.

For a long time, he was in the status of a “sleeper agent” in order to settle in a new place and “unwind” his own business cover.

According to the SBU military counterintelligence, in the fall of 2023, Russian intelligence “unmasked” its agent.

Under the guise of commercial trips, he “traveled” around Kyiv and Cherkasy regions, where he tried to detect batteries and radar stations of NASAMS and Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems.

To track possible positions of Ukrainian troops, the Russian used marine binoculars and high-resolution monoculars. He also installed a hidden video camera in his car.

The agent was supposed to pass the intelligence in the form of media files and geolocations of Ukrainian armed forces units to his Russian supervisor to carry out synchronized air strikes in Ukraine.

In addition, in the course of documenting the suspect, the SBU identified his “curator” – a staff member of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces.

SBU investigators served the detainee a notice of suspicion. He faces up to 12 years in prison.

This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General.

When the patrol policemen stopped their car to check their documents, the suspects started shooting. One patrol policeman was killed and another was wounded.

They face imprisonment for a term of 9 to 15 years or life imprisonment.

Earlier, a vehicle used by the wanted persons and ammunition were found in Vinnytsia region.

Also, during the investigation, a weapon was found – probably the murder weapon.

Currently, investigative actions are being conducted with the suspects and the issue of choosing a measure of restraint in the form of detention is being decided.

The pre-trial investigation in criminal proceedings is carried out by investigators of the Main Department of the National Police in Vinnytsia region and the State Bureau of Investigation in Mykolaiv.

Earlier, the Interior Ministry’s KORD special forces detained the killers of 20-year-old police officer Maksym Zaretskyi in the village of Lypetske, Podil district, Odesa region. Russian propagandists spread a fake about Kirill Budanov’s capture

від Юрій Гончаренко April 21, 2024

Russian propagandists continue to spread disinformation, in particular about Kyrylo Budanov, the Chief of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. According to the Center for Strategic Communications and Information Security, fake reports have appeared about his alleged capture after the shelling of the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Lies: After a large-scale missile attack on the positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, it was reported that one of the most important Ukrainian figures had been eliminated. Later it turned out that it was the head of the GUR Budanov and he was captured by the Russian military. The news was written by the Kremlin’s “z-military” – they tell about a new fake in the Center.

This case is not unique, as Russians have used similar methods to spread lies in the past. In order to create a more convincing narrative, particularly this time, they used deep-fake technology, trying to visualize their claims with the help of processed images of Budanov.

It should also be noted that a similar fake was already replicated in October 2023, which indicates a targeted campaign to discredit Ukrainian military leaders by the Russian media.
