Russian propagandists continue to spread disinformation, in particular about Kyrylo Budanov, the Chief of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. According to the Center for Strategic Communications and Information Security, fake reports have appeared about his alleged capture after the shelling of the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Lies: After a large-scale missile attack on the positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, it was reported that one of the most important Ukrainian figures had been eliminated. Later it turned out that it was the head of the GUR Budanov and he was captured by the Russian military. The news was written by the Kremlin’s “z-military” – they tell about a new fake in the Center.
This case is not unique, as Russians have used similar methods to spread lies in the past. In order to create a more convincing narrative, particularly this time, they used deep-fake technology, trying to visualize their claims with the help of processed images of Budanov.
It should also be noted that a similar fake was already replicated in October 2023, which indicates a targeted campaign to discredit Ukrainian military leaders by the Russian media.
