Odesa frees itself from Russian influence: myths, propaganda and Ukrainian identity

від Юрій Гончаренко July 27, 2024

The liberation of Odesa from the “plague of the Russian world” was a landmark event in the fight against Russian influence. Serhiy Hutsaliuk, a well-known historian, Armed Forces officer, and participant in the revolutionary events, emphasizes that the idea of Odesa as a Russian city is a modern myth created by Russian Nazi propaganda.

He spoke about this to the 10 Questions to a Historian channel.

Russian influence and propaganda

Hutsaliuk emphasizes that the liberation of Odesa from Russian influence is a significant step in overcoming the stereotypes imposed. He notes that ATV’s journalists have become ideologues and propagandists, promoting a specific agenda instead of objective coverage of events.

According to Hutsalyuk, ATV played a significant role in inciting hatred and creating an ideological basis during the Revolution of Dignity, which emphasizes the great influence of the media on shaping public opinion. He also argues that modern Russian propaganda far exceeds Nazi propaganda in its cruelty, creating a dangerous ideology that threatens people’s lives.

Historical significance and Ukrainian identity

Hutsaliuk also draws attention to the erection of a monument to Catherine II in Odesa, which he considers the culmination of the Russian World project. This indicates a desire to capture the city. However, the ideas of the “Russian world” in Odesa have been in decline since the beginning of the twentieth century, and now, thanks to Putin’s actions, they have been defeated.

He also emphasizes the importance of preserving historical heritage, mentioning the destruction of Ottoman architectural monuments by the Russian Orthodox Church in the 1990s. This emphasizes the disregard for historical preservation on the part of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Odesa played a significant role in the Ukrainian State and the Ukrainian People’s Republic. Battles took place on its streets, and the Odesa Haidamak Division was formed. Hutsaliuk emphasizes that the Ukrainian language in Odesa was harassed, and school charters were changed to remove Ukrainian and introduce Russian. This is evidence of the ongoing struggle for language rights in the region.

Ukrainian identity of Odesa

Hutsaliuk emphasizes that Odesa was never a Russian city, but rather an imperial city that remained Ukrainian even during tsarist times, with a majority Ukrainian population. The intellectual part of the movement, which included historians and educators, played a crucial role in preserving the Ukrainian spirit and spreading it among the population.

Thus, the liberation of Odesa from Russian influence and propaganda is a key moment in restoring historical justice and affirming Ukrainian identity.

The murder of Irina Farion: Budanov condemns and promises punishment

від Юрій Гончаренко July 22, 2024

Today, Ukraine said goodbye to a prominent public figure and scholar Iryna Farion.

The head of the Main Intelligence Directorate, Kyrylo Budanov , expressed his deep concern over the cold-blooded murder of the famous linguist, calling it a challenge for the entire Ukrainian society and a crime against the fundamental rights and freedoms of Ukrainians.

“This tragedy has once again demonstrated that the enemy seeks to use any tools to divide our nation. Therefore, we have no right to forget that despite our differences in political positions, the right to an opinion and the right to defend our beliefs is sacred. This is the foundation of our freedom, and anyone who encroaches on it must be punished,” Budanov said.

Budanov emphasized that Iryna Farion died for the Ukrainian position and called for decisive action in response to this crime: “We have no right to tolerate such crimes and will continue to defend Ukraine both at the front and inside our country.”

In conclusion, he expressed his condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and said: “May Ms. Iryna’s memory be blessed.”

Shock. National Socialism and the Threat of Marginalization of Christianity

від Майданюк Валерій July 21, 2024

The transformation of Nazism into a dominant force in continental Europe did not strengthen the position of traditionalism, as conservatives had hoped, but led to the establishment of a totalitarian “new order.” Totalitarianism effectively destroyed all old institutions. The rule of law, personal and political freedoms, and government accountability were abolished. Moreover, even the institution of the church and religion were threatened.

The Nazi ideology was extremely critical of the influence of Christianity on the fate of European civilization. For the Nazis, the activities of the Christian Church were equal to “Jewish influence.”

The Nazis perceived the traditional virtues of Christian doctrine, such as mercy, justice, and universalism, as traits that negatively affected the Aryan virtues of Europeans.

The influence of Christian churches was severely limited. Gradually, the Nazis banned the activities of all social church organizations: trade unions, relief committees, and youth organizations. A ban was also imposed on Christian publications. Even small-circulation episcopal newsletters were banned.

The Nazis planned to significantly revise the church’s teachings. The Old Testament and the apostolic epistles were to be banned. The Nazis had plans to place Hitler’s Mein Kampf next to the Bible in churches, and to replace traditional crosses in churches with swastikas.

It became clear that if Nazism continued to dominate, the influence of Christianity would be significantly reduced, and Christianity itself would be changed beyond recognition. The gradual realization of this fact caused a real shock among many contemporaries of the already banned Christian parties, priests, or Christian intellectuals.

The dubious prospects of Christianity led to the emergence of the phenomenon of “Christian resistance” in Nazi-controlled countries. Individual Christian intellectuals, members of banned Christian parties, priests, and sometimes church hierarchs expressed a position that ran counter to the Nazi ideology. Even more hierarchs tried to avoid any public support for the Nazis’ actions and secretly rescued groups persecuted by the Nazis. This was the position of Pope Pius XII. Refraining from publicly supporting the Nazis, Pius XII gave unofficial orders to monasteries to hide political opponents of Nazism and Jews.

Gradually, Christian groups emerged in the resistance movements of Italy and France and began an armed struggle against Nazism.

The existence of the “Christian resistance” and radical polarization with the totalitarian parties turned the “democratic Christianity” movement into one of the most prominent forces in post-Nazi Europe.

The struggle against totalitarian Nazism and the potential threat of totalitarian communism led to the formation of the most original European phenomenon of the postwar period: powerful Christian democratic movements.

Although most European Christian democratic parties were founded in the second half of the 1940s, the last years of World War II were key to the crystallization of the intellectual foundation of Christian democracy.

In 1943, the French personalist philosopher Jacques Maritain published his book Christianity and Democracy. Maritain’s book outlined the main approaches and ideological foundations of Christian democratic movements. Maritain stated that due to the short-sightedness of political elites, Europe faced a choice “between communism, which fights against God, and Nazism, which tries to subjugate God to its own purposes.”

In Maritain’s view, postwar Europe could achieve lasting peace only if “Christianity and democracy are reunited.” For Maritain, the key question was whether Christians would be able to transform themselves into citizens who could take responsibility for the fate of their homeland, Europe, and Christian civilization in general.

The work of Jacques Maritain is quite illustrative and can serve as an example of the transformation of the ideological views of the generation that survived World War II. Back in the 1920s, Maritain belonged to the Catholic group Acción Française, which professed authoritarian and corporate views. Just like Maritain, large groups of Europeans, faced with the realities of Nazism, abandoned their illusions about authoritarianism and rediscovered the role of the church and Christian teaching.

If Jacques Maritain’s book influenced mostly elite groups, the change in the position of the Roman Church was much more important for the masses. In his Christmas message of 1944, Pope Pius XII declared that democracy was the form of government that was closest to Christian ideals. This statement finally legitimized the political activity of Catholics by the church and contributed to the formation of democratic Catholicism.

Pius XII’s Christmas message was all the more significant because those territories in postwar Europe that were liberated from Nazi rule and did not fall under Communist occupation were largely Catholic. Even in the western zones of occupied Germany, Catholics made up an approximately equal proportion of the population compared to Protestants.

Jacques Maritain’s book and Pius XII’s message did not so much shape the public demand for a combination of Christianity and democracy as reflect it. It was these two political figures who finally crystallized the intellectual outlines of Christian democracy.

How Christian Democrats created the European Union

від Майданюк Валерій July 21, 2024

Today, many Ukrainians and Europeans do not know that the EU, which has become the key to peace and economic growth in Europe, was created seven decades ago by Christian democrats.

According to researcher Jeff Fontaine, in the first half of the twentieth century, France and Germany behaved like stray dogs, grabbing pieces of borderlands and provoking world wars. However, a quick and lasting reconciliation between European countries became possible thanks to a small group of figures who professed Christian values.

It was Christian values that helped postwar European politicians negotiate long-term peace and cooperation between countries that had been at war for almost a thousand years. In the second millennium AD alone, hundreds of wars were fought between the French, Germans, Italians, Dutch, Spaniards, etc., and each country considered its neighbors to be its main enemies. Christian pastors had a great conciliatory influence on the views of representatives of antagonistic states – Germany and France – regarding the ownership of the Saarland coal basin. French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman and German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer managed to establish a dialogue primarily through joint attendance at Christian events, where each realized the need for compromise and trust.

Today, it seems that after the collapse of Nazism, the emergence of the Marshall Plan, and the creation of NATO, Europe was doomed to peaceful development, but this is not the case. Due to the distrust and tensions between states, these projects could have failed, and Europe was on the verge of repeating the mistakes of the past. The founders of the European integration idea, Robert Schuman, Alcide de Gasperi, and Konrad Adenauer, believed that in addition to economic initiatives, it was necessary to create an atmosphere of forgiveness, repentance, and reconciliation.

Schuman emphasized that the reconstruction of Europe is possible only on the basis of deeply rooted, basic Christian values. Moreover, Schumann believed that democracy would either be Christian or it would not exist at all. An anti-Christian democracy will turn into a parody that will sink into tyranny or anarchy. According to Schumann, by cutting off Christian roots, Europe would lose the concepts of equality, human dignity, and tolerance.

Schumann proposed to Adenauer to create a supranational system of control over the coal and metallurgy of both countries and make war not only undesirable but also materially impossible. This was an innovative step by the “Father of Europe” that was not without the influence of the Christian worldview.

After the Schuman Declaration on the conceptual structure of European integration on May 9, 1950, the further unification process was launched. On April 18, 1951, the Treaty of Paris was signed establishing the European Coal and Steel Community, followed by the Treaty of Rome in 1957 and the creation of the European Economic Community (EEC), Euroatom and customs agreements. Charles de Gaulle, who did not want to weaken France’s sovereignty, maneuvered between weakening and strengthening the influence of Germany, Britain, the United States, and European institutions in Europe, and delayed the EU’s institutional evolution for two decades. However, the foundations laid by the Christian Democrats made it possible to create a structure that remains a model of security, economic development, and social justice for the whole world.

Attention, fake news: Maxim Bobylev, who was recently returned from captivity, did not escape from the hospital!

від Юрій Гончаренко July 20, 2024

Information began to spread on social media that Maksim Bobylev, who was returned from captivity on July 17, had allegedly escaped from the hospital. For example, an officer of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and former MP Igor Lapin wrote about this on his Facebook page.

This information does not correspond to reality,InfoLight.UA reports , citing sources in the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War.

It should be noted that the attention to this particular prisoner arose because of suspicions of alleged collaboration with the occupiers, due to the statement of former prisoner of war Viktor “Leleka” Lakhn that Bobylev allegedly worked for the administration of the detention center where prisoners were held and tortured.

“The information about the escape is not true, post-isolation measures are underway, law enforcement agencies are working, and this work does not always take place in one place,” – explained the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War.

“Persons who are incompetent in post-isolation support and law enforcement issues in the context of protecting the rights of prisoners of war are asked to refrain from commenting and making value judgments that can be used by enemy propaganda to fight against the Ukrainian security and defense sector. Intentional and deliberate dissemination of this information can be considered as deliberate dissemination of disinformation,” the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War emphasized, commenting on the dissemination of unverified information for InfoLight.UA .

NATO general recognizes success of Syrian ‘war strategy’

від Юрій Гончаренко July 19, 2024

General Christopher Cavoli, Commander-in-Chief of NATO’s allied forces in Europe, said during a discussion at the Aspen Institute that Ukraine has a “great strategy” for waging war against Russia, although the course of the fighting is becoming increasingly difficult to predict.

The general emphasized that the course of the war will depend on the ability to “generate force.” In particular, on which side will be able to accumulate “high-quality force faster and take advantage of it while it has a window of opportunity.”

Cavoli noted: “The Ukrainians are now generating that power and are skillfully strategizing. Over the last few months, they have been focused on defending the eastern territories, not allowing Russia to freely use Crimea and southern Ukraine to attack, maintaining their access to the Black Sea and generating power. So I think they have a great strategy. It’s just a matter of continuing to execute it.”.

General Oleksandr Syrskyi, who was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in February 2024, was recognized internationally, confirming his success in repelling the enemy’s offensive and reforming the Armed Forces.

Revolution in camouflage: how General Syrskyi is rebuilding the Armed Forces of Ukraine

від Юрій Гончаренко July 18, 2024

Recent appointments to Ukraine’s top military leadership have triggered a wave of changes in the Armed Forces. Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi, who became the head of the Armed Forces, has launched a large-scale reform program under the slogan “Saving the lives of servicemen.” What does this mean for the army and the country?

Training and education

Syrsky emphasized the need to improve the training of the military. He is introducing new training programs that incorporate modern technologies and methods to ensure that soldiers are ready for any challenge on the battlefield.

Medical care

One of Syrsky’s top priorities is to improve medical care for the military. He works to ensure that soldiers receive quality medical support at all stages – from the front line to rehabilitation centers.

Rotation and rest

Syrsky has started the process of rotating units that have been on the front line for a long time. This helps to stabilize the situation at the front and improve the morale and psychological state of the military, giving them the opportunity to rest and recover.

Modern technologies

Syrskyi is actively introducing modern technologies such as drones and electronic warfare. These technologies help the Ukrainian military gain an advantage over Russian forces, making combat missions more effective.

Responsibility of commanders

Syrsky also drew attention to the responsibility of commanders for their subordinates. Commanders now have to take care of the lives and health of soldiers, which contributes to a culture of responsibility and care in the military hierarchy.

Thanks to Oleksandr Syrskyi’s reforms, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are becoming stronger and more effective. Increased training, better medical care, the introduction of modern technology and responsible leadership are making the Ukrainian army more resilient and ready to defend the country against any threat.

Time will tell how effective these reforms will be. But we can already say that the Ukrainian army is on the verge of profound changes that could shape its face for decades to come.

New exchange of prisoners of war: 95 servicemen returned home

від Юрій Гончаренко July 17, 2024

As a result of measures taken by the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War on behalf of the President of Ukraine, 95 more Ukrainian servicemen were released from enemy captivity.

Among those released are 49 soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, including a member of the “air bridge” who volunteered to fly a helicopter to Azovstal to help the blocked units, as well as two servicemen from the Air Force. In addition, 21 National Guardsmen, 10 sailors, seven members of the Territorial Defense Forces, five border guards, two representatives of the State Special Transport Service, and one defender from a volunteer territorial community group were among those liberated.

All of those released this time are men: 88 privates and sergeants, seven officers. Among our heroes who gained their freedom, 23 defended Mariupol (including 13 Azovstal defenders), 41 fought in the Donetsk sector, nine in the Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia sectors, and three in the Kherson and Kharkiv sectors. One of the liberated sailors was in Kyiv region at the time of the invasion and immediately joined the defense of his village against the occupiers as part of the Makariv territorial defense unit. While providing humanitarian aid to the local community, he was captured by Russian soldiers.

Many returning Ukrainian soldiers suffer from the consequences of their injuries and have chronic illnesses that require long-term treatment. Most of them have been in captivity since 2022. Also among those released is a defender who was reported missing.

Ukraine expresses its gratitude to the United Arab Emirates for its assistance and mediation in the preparation of the exchange.

Hungary builds up military presence on the border with Ukraine

від Юрій Гончаренко July 16, 2024

In recent months, Hungary has significantly increased its military presence along its border with Ukraine. Yegor Chicherinda writes about this.

Reservists are involved, as well as local territorial defense units that conduct exercises. The latter is near the town of Nagykanizha, where the 5th Regiment of the TRO is located. There has been a sharp increase in the activity of exercises at the Bakon training ground.

In addition, the country is increasing the production of the latest weapons, including modern tanks and armored vehicles. The army is being rearmed, and contracts are being signed for the purchase of military equipment. This includes tactical transport military helicopters Airbus Helicopters H225M.

It is important to understand that Hungary does not coordinate such actions with either NATO or the European Union. Despite the fact that it has full membership in both organizations. In theory, such membership should entail not only rights and opportunities, but also serious responsibility for unauthorized actions. However, at the moment, the European Union and NATO are keeping a wary silence and waiting for further actions of their “partner.”

“What we get from Hungary is a deliberate blocking of any assistance to Ukraine, friendship with Russia and China, and the promotion of the idea of a “ceasefire” according to the Kremlin’s scenario,”Csicherinda concludes.

Given that the current leaders of the country do not even hide their territorial encroachments on Ukraine, all this can be either a provocation or a direct demonstration of force.

Silence of the “lambs”: why do some “Christians” not mention the war and tragedy in Ukraine?

від Майданюк Валерій July 13, 2024

On July 8, Russians deliberately attacked the National Children’s Hospital “Okhmatdyt” in Kyiv with a missile. The number of victims and injured is increasing, and people are dying in intensive care units from their injuries. In this situation, it is very strange and even cynical that those who should be the first to express condolences, let alone offer a helping hand, are silent and ignoring this tragedy. Some European Christian organizations and media platforms are silent about the shocking tragedy and murder of children in the center of Europe. Moreover, some of them have not mentioned the war in Ukraine for a long time!

Some political NGOs that call themselves “Christian” in their publications and appeals worry about the aging of the population in Japan, comment on statements by Brussels bureaucrats, readily mention the problems of Syria, Gaza, the problems of Christians in India and Nigeria, but hardly mention the suffering of Christians in the largest European country. Of course, Christians should sympathize with all people, regardless of continents, but to ignore the misfortunes of neighbors, the suffering and death of Ukrainians, while being more concerned with discussions among European political parties, looks strange, to say the least. For example, one of the European Christian foundations has not made a single statement about the war in Ukraine over the past two years, but instead expressed concern about the growing number of lonely pensioners in Japan in its monthly newsletter.

Some popular English-language Christian publics and communities on social media, with hundreds of thousands of members, actively post biblical and spiritual quotes and beautiful religious photos, but hardly mention the suffering of Christians in Ukraine, let alone acts of help. I would like to ask, is everything okay with such Christians who do not notice people in need, but are busy only with beautiful pictures of Jesus?

The first Christians were categorical: if you are a Christian, who do you help? Helping, or at least showing mercy to people, is repeatedly mentioned in the words of Jesus and in the Bible. But ignoring those in need is condemned as hypocrisy, which has nothing to do with faith or hope for the Kingdom of Heaven.

In connection with the Russian crime against children, the Conservative Platform appealed to all Christians of the world, to those who profess common values, with a call. “The Russian attack on Okhmatdyt is a crime against humanity and cynicism without limits. Christians in Europe and the United States, now is the time to act. Your support can help defeat an anti-human, anti-Christian empire. Do not remain indifferent to the suffering of the innocent, raise your voice against this evil. As Psalm 82:4 says, “Defend the poor and the orphan, deliver the oppressed and the poor from the hands of the wicked.” The time has come to stop this ungodly aggression and to defend those who cannot defend themselves. Now is not the time for silence. Each of us must contribute to the fight against this beast. We cannot allow evil to prevail. Christians around the world, unite in prayer and action for peace and justice!”

Humanity has entered an era when global evil in the form of dictatorial regimes seeks to spread and enslave free countries, so the silence and neutrality of Christians is unacceptable. As the conservative philosopher Edmund Burke noted: “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” Christians face a choice: open their eyes and take the side of good in this global confrontation with evil, or remain silent witnesses to the triumph of evil.
